
DeWitt began performing on stage at the age of 13. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Ball State University. When she performed in her summer stock she was persuaded by the director to enroll at UCLA's Department of Theater MFA Program. She was awarded the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship and the Clifton Webb Scholarship. While at UCLA she worked as a secretary up to her television debut on an episode of Baretta.Contrary to the rumor that she was trained by actor Abe Vigoda, Dewitt has claimed that they have never met. DeWitt's character as Janet Wood in Three's Company's 1977-1984 run is her most famous. She was cast in the show's pilot and was selected. She also played Janet in an episode from 1979 on the spinoff series The Ropers. After Three's Company ended in 1984, DeWitt appeared in an episode of Finder of Lost Loves in 1984 in which she then ceased acting for a number of years. Acting was her first return on stage in the month of June in 1991 when she was a performer on a Noises Off production at Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse. The actress later appeared in the 1995 TV comedy film Spring Fling! Pinky and the Brain featured a character that was based on her voiced by a different actress in 1997. She was featured in an episode Cybill. Her television shows from the 2000s include Hope Island and The Nick at Nite Holiday Special as well as Call of the Wild.
